There's something that bothers me a little about the complaints that the Preservation Alliance team aren't "professional" in the show compared to the books, and I think it's just... I have a different idea of what professional science looks like.
Even in the books, we don't actually see the team do that much science. They take some "samples", and SecUnit thinks of them as professionals, but other than SecUnit's internal monologue, they don't do that much more than in the show. They actually talk more about their work in the show than in the books!
I wonder if some of it is that the Preservation Alliance doesn't fit what people's idea of a competent scientist, particularly a competent scientist on TV, looks like. They're expecting the Big Bang Theory, or Gurathin bent over a computer terminal muttering "I'm in" as green code plays across his face, or Arada rattling off a bunch of jargon while dissecting an alien creature, or Bharadwaj IDing the alien remnant based on rocks or something. And that's not really how science actually... works.
Honestly, as a scientist, this is one of the more realistic depictions of actual science I could expect from a TV show, unless you wanted to watch several hours of people working quietly at their computers with expressions of various levels of exhaustion, annoyance, and stress on their faces, or sorting samples, or wandering around staring at the dirt, or sitting around debating the nature of "nature" and the ethical implications of terraforming or whatever (which would be cool, but also, not plot relevant, I'll just assume it's happening off-screen). I could sort half my coworkers by which character they're most like: the upbeat professor who's always trying to help (Bharadwaj), the hippy biologist who freaks out about disturbing 'natural processes' (Arada), the extra-friendly super outgoing possibly ADHD guy (Ratthi), and the overly cynical constantly complaining about capitalism and swearing over his grants analyst (Gurathin). I don't know who's got the open marriage because I prefer not to know about the sex lives of my coworkers, but I know some are in pretty messy relationships - that don't spill over into their work. Because they are professionals.
Basically, I look at this show and I see - my office. So when people say that they're not competent, that they're bumbling or not good scientists, honestly, it's kind of annoying. They're people, not just scientists, with stuff going on outside of their work, namely: someone's trying to kill them, something that absolutely none of them are prepared for. You don't learn how to handle that in grad school! Of course they're going to be messy and make mistakes - that's what people do. Scientists too.
#honestly it's hard to put science in a show#that's not about the science#like do you really want to hear bharadwaj talk about rocks#they're not plot relevant rocks#we know she's good because she got the combat override out#we know gurathin's good because he's monitoring stuff#we know arada's good because she immediately nerds out over the eggs#the number of my colleagues who would be right there with her#trying to decide whether to remove them or not#...i'd be there too XD#about all it missed is someone going#“can we film this?”#“someone take notes!”#but i'll just assume that's what the timeskip was for#anyway#not everyone needs to be superman to be 'competent'#the show's busy with other stuff#murderbot#murderbot show#murderbot tv#murderbot tv spoilers#murderbot diaries#scientists#my thoughts#murderbot tv meta#murderbot meta

Absolutely wild to me how sometimes you don't even realize the way you'd been taught to perceive things as a kid was kinda fucked up, actually, until decades later.
Example:
As a kid, I constantly lived in fear of damaging shit in my parent's house. The walls. The floors (especially the floors. The wood was beautiful. Shiny. But so easy to scratch). The cabinets.
As a sixteen-year-old, I once took my car to the dealership after work and paid a very dear sum of $250 ($10/hr cashier salary) to fix a slight scratch in the paint because I knew if my father saw it there would be hell to pay. It didn't matter that I parked far out, like I'd been taught, and someone scratched it anyway. It was my fault. I failed in my duties as a steward of my vehicle.
Every time I scratched a rim on a curb while parallel parking or got a door ding or, god forbid, didn't wash and vacuum that car every weekend, it was treated like some sort of moral failing.
Last year, when my husband and I first moved into our house, he scraped the side of our car when parking in our (Very Narrow) garage. When he told me, my first instinct was to be afraid for him. Like something terrible was going to happen to him because of this mistake. I urgently reassured him that it was okay, it was an accident, I wasn't mad. Baffled, he was like, "Yeah? I know? Like, thank you for the reassurance, but I'm only a little annoyed, I'm not upset. It's just a car." And I had to take several minutes to process that. It's...just a car.
We keep the car tidy. We maintain it. But we wash it maybe 4x a year. We only vacuum it after dirty road trips or when the dog hair starts to get annoying. It has scrapes and dings and the leather seats have stains. But that's ok. Because it's just a car.
This morning, I realized that a small rock had gotten embedded in the felt foot on one of our bar stools. Neither of us had noticed. There are now scratches on our beautiful hardwood floor. My immediate response was fear accompanied by a heavy measure of paralyzing guilt. "I'm so sorry," I told my husband, "I should have noticed. I'll figure out how to fix it, I swear. I can probably sand down that section and match the stain and--"
"Whoa, hey," he said. "It was an accident. And it's fine. Floors are going to get damaged. They're floors. We live here. There was damage in places before we even bought the house, remember? It's not a big deal. It's just a floor." Right. It's just a floor. Right.
My husband's mom is visiting and this afternoon, as I was sitting in the kitchen looking at the scratches on the floor, I offhandedly asked her if my husband had ever broken or damaged anything as a kid. "Of course," she said. Household items. A TV. A wrecked car during his teen years. I asked how she punished him.
"Why would I punish him for things like that?" she said. "They were all accidents."
Right. Of course. Right.

Just because I remember that smut used to be called lemon back in 2011-2016??, I think that fem!Shen Yuan would definitely use Peerless Lemon.
That would cause the whole internet calling her small tits? Yeah. A pic of Peerless Lemon's not-so-small tits was leaked "by mistake" with a mini Luo Binghe tank-top stretched taut over her braless breasts? Yeah. Would the internet go crazy over Peerless Lemon and the fact that she doesn't have litte lemon tits and heart-pierced nipples? Yeah.
Of course that's also the only pic fem!Bingge has to find Peerless Lemon, after falling into a universe where for some reason she is male ??? and married to a Shen Qingqiu ??? (surprisingly also male), who just sighs as if the fact that random Luo Binghes (plural) falling into his garden is an everyday occurrence, he sends his husband to put the kettle on, and gives her the long list of information to keep in mind to finding her soulmate.
And, since this strange Shen Qingqiu has never been a woman, he just can theorize, but for Luo Binghe finding the "Shen Yuan" of that world is extremely easy even without the Peerless Cucumber ID — There's a Peerless ID, foul written language, and an obsessive fanaticism for... well, her.
So, Luo Binghe only has a pic of pierced tits (because the fabric is so stretched it could almost be transparent), an ID, and the hope of finding Shen Yuan and finally being treated with the devoted love she deserves.

This is kind of just me blabbing about fandom stuff so feel free to ignore
After I finished queueing up the kinley-cafe orders for the weekend, I spent some of my free time hanging out and being silly with my friends and I started thinking about how at one point I wanted to close KC for good but I continually felt drawn back to it by the welcoming fandom and all the kindness everyone had to share with one another. Even after buck and tommy broke up. Lots of people were still here. Building community, finding comfort in each other and creating.
I just think about how a lot of people in the fandom found a home with each other. And yeah it's different little spaces for everyone. But when I read the notes on the orders, I can tell that everyone in their friend groups really like and even love each other so much and I feel so honored to be trusted to be the person to send along these sweet messages. Out of the thousands I've sent out since KC opened almost a year ago, I cannot tell you how many times I've sent along a treat with a note that says "I love you" and then sending along another treat months and months later to the same recipient from the same sender, still saying "I love you"
These past few events, I've sent out 1k+ orders every time. And it's not like bucktommy is a massive fandom, yknow? And even with ship sweets, we're coming up on 600+ orders already.
That's...a lot of love to give. To hundreds of different people. And it's nice.
I really like that a lot of friend groups reflect what we love about bucktommy. That we feel safe with each other and it feels like home whenever we're talking to the friends and even partners we met here.
That means a lot to me. And I like being part of that.
#anyway#i'm just happy today#i had a good time with my friends and i've been reeling ever since#bucktommy

Some anatomy studies:) Og E-Soul.
I feel like a crazy person specifying every time that this is og E-Soul but then I go look through fandom stuff and it annoys me that I often can’t instantly tell if the post is about E-Soul or Yang Cheng lol. Just five minutes ago got invested reading a post about E-Soul and only half way through the author mentioned Shang Chao and made me go “oh fuck wait it’s not about my old man get outta here” lol
It gets even more confusing since Yang Cheng is apparently going to become much buffer in the future so every official concept art is just a game of guessing 😔
#og e-soul#tbhx#tbhx e-soul#to be hero x#e-soul#do I need to tag it as nsfw…no probably not#dudes film themselves wearing only shorts all the time and no one cares#anyway#I did some anatomy practice#because while drawing the meme page about the ass I realised I don’t know how do draw an ass lol#now I know

This was the norm back when TV shows were episodic and they could not significantly change anyone's life in an episode without changing it back to the status quo by the end
The "justifiable reason" was that TV networks reserved the right to air the show in whatever order they damn well pleased and so the show runners had to write it so that it would more-or-less make sense in any order
this can be blamed for soooo many stupid tropes and it's awful and i love it
Hetbait kind of goes harder than queerbait sometimes. Queerbait you understand that the creators very rarely could do it even if they wanted to so implication and suggestion was better and safer than being explicit. Hetbait though there's no such justifiable reason they just want to fuck with you.
#there was also a time when newspaper comics and mystery short stories#and anything serialized at all#was the same#you could pick up any installment of it and it would be comprehensible#without seeing any of what came “before” or “after”#which came in handy because you could rarely even get a chance to see them all “in order” anyway#anyway#we used to be a proper country#reblogster#notron anyvirus#userworldproblems
